PERIODONTITIS

The treatment of periodontitis offers a second chance to patients whose mouths suffer from this infection. Periodontal treatment and the subsequent maintenance allow the patient to achieve a healthy mouth.

Periodontitis, formerly known as pyorrhoea, is one of the most common infectious diseases that people suffer and is the chief cause of tooth loss in the world. Its origins are normally genetic and the lack of clinical symptoms makes it a largely unknown disease which is difficult for the patient to self-diagnose.

The bacteria responsible for periodontitis firstly settle on the surface of the teeth: they are called bacterial plaque, and they subsequently infect the gum: this is called GINGIVITIS. Subsequently, and intermittently (in outbreaks), the bacteria begin to destroy the bone which supports the teeth, forming periodontal pockets around the teeth: this is called Periodontitis (Pyorrhoea). The first stage of treatment mainly consists of dental hygiene treatment known as scraping (wrongly named curettage) which consists of the removal of the bacterial plaque and the supragingival and subgingival calculus (tartar). In our centre this stage is performed by qualified hygienists who are highly professional, have vast experience and have an excellent personal touch.

The second stage of treatment consists of the surgical removal of the periodontal pockets to avoid reinfection. This surgery is carried out with local anaesthetic and the patient can continue to carry out their daily activities with complete normality.
